Producers and Distributors

Learning Comments: I myself was not exactly shocked at the amount of companies producing films, before completing this task i had in fact not even heard of some of the producers i have studied, although that still does not phase me, the film industry is humongous and it would not surprise me if even more film companies started emerging. I am however shocked at the cost of production for even the smallest films, the companies have to produce such large profits to even break even on their films, this is entirely dependent on whether or not the target audience enjoys their film, that's what frightens me the most. Furthermore i am not shocked at where some of the film companies are based, if i was running a film company, i myself would also want to be based in a largely populated area with a lot of more wealthy people, i know this may seem quite vain but that is in fact where the majority of the revenue will be coming from.

Conventions of an opening sequence

Learning comments: I do believe that my initial ideas and checklist from task one were nearly spot on, though i do want to ass that the camera angles and background props and images definitely have a profound impact on the film and the way the films genre is presented, along with its themes and ideals.

Director Case Study

Jason Reitman

Jason Reitman (born October 19, 1977) is a Canadian-American film director, screenwriter, and producer, best known for directing the films Thank You for Smoking (2005), Juno (2007), Up in the Air (2009), and Young Adult (2011). As of February 2, 2010, he has received one Grammy award and four Academy Award nominations, two of which are for Best Director. Reitman is a dual citizen of Canada and the United States. He is the son of director Ivan Reitman.
Jason Reitman is an extremely famous man=, known for making very successful opening sequences, Reitman has made some very famous opening sequences, such as Juno and Jennifer's body.
Jason Reitman has produced some very revolutionary opening sequences and shows his style of producing very well.
Jason Reitman uses strong narrative to express the genre his movies produced. Reitman sometimes uses actors more than once and has sometimes often recycled actors to use them in other movies that he has produced and directed.
Reitman had started to apply for acting roles himself on his early teen years, not fully knowing how much he wanted to produce movies instead of appearing in them. Reitman has a very deliberate style, as seen in Juno. Reitman likes to use some very unique and practically hipster' editing styles and techniques.

Learning comments: Jason Reitman uses some very profound styles, for example he like to break the stigma that all teenagers films should be 'soft' and 'cheesy' i despise this stereotype as teenage life is nothing like that, I intend to use this style in my opening sequence as i believe it will give my opening sequence a certain unique-ness that cannot be replicated easily. Jason Reitman also like to use a soft audio style to match the genre of films he makes, i also intend to do this as if you have some audio that does not match the genre and themes of the movie it distracts you away from the films quality, as it has done so many times before.

Histroy of coming of age films

Learning comments: I have noticed some very strong similarities as well as some strong differences, firstly i have noticed that all these films seem to have a somewhat, if not large comedic value to these films, whether it be the whole film or just a small portion if it, some comedy is always included, this may be due to the fat that the films are directed at teenagers but i suspect i would also use this fro my opening sequence, it has worked so far so why try to oppose it, secondly i have noticed that most of these films have some sort of character with a strong personality, whether it be the main character or just a brief side character, this may play into my last point as these characters sometimes have a very comedic atmosphere around them
I have also noticed that some of these films have some very prominent differences, these films generally all have some sort of story-line but in some of the films  have analysed, good or bad have chosen to expel that stereotypical type of story telling. I believe this gives some of these films a certain sense of unique-ness and it makes me want to watch them even more.
I like all of these qualities and plan to use as many of them in my opening scene as i can, although I do wish for my opening sequence to be unique and totally unseen before.

Famous movie opening sequences.

Toy story's opening scene is an elaborate progression of the introduction of all the main characters and the protagonist of the story, the start of this opening sequence is met by the introduction of the production company, this tells you straight away who made the film and gives you a brief introduction to the general genre of the film.

Gravity the film uses its opening scene to exaggerate the genre of the film as it carries out through its entirety. Gravity uses the introduction scene to introduce the severity of the situation and the seriousness of the film.

The help uses many techniques to introduce you to the piece of entertainment that you will be viewing, the help uses narrator to introduce you to the protagonist and give you some context about the story and tells you a little bit about the situation the characters are in. This opening scene shows the viewer the genre of the film and shows you how to story will be presented.

Pirates of the caribbean's opening scene is very mysterious and suspenseful, the start of this film uses its time to introduce you to some of the main chapters and some the characters that will be featured in this story. This opening scene introduces you to the setting of this story and tells you the names of some of the main characters.

Rise of the guardians uses the intro scene to introduce the backstory of the main character and gives you an insight as to what the story/ film will be about and what genre it will be located in, is of the guardians opening scene tells you about the protagonists initial beginning and makes indices the viewer to watch the rest of this magical film.

Lord of the rings' opening scene give you a major insight into the story and give you lots of context about the story you will be watching. Lord of the rings' opening scene is used to tell he reader about the lore of the franchise and gives you an insight into the presentation of the rest of the story.

Juno's opening scene is very well presented, it gives you a full view of what the story will be presented like, this scene uses cartoon clunky images to tell you the genre of the film and the hip music used tells you about the type of film you will be watching.

Harry Potter's introduction scene tells the viewer about a lot of the context behind the story, the introduction scene is used to express the genre and incentive behind the story, the music used gives you a magical reminiscent feeling and that fully expresses the genre of the story the viewer will be watching.

Learning Comments: I have learnt that despite the differences in genre and thees of the movies, many of them still have some redeeming similarities, all of these films seem to have one protagonist, one antagonist and many other side characters, i have to break this stigma with my opening sequence and be much more unique. I have also noticed that many directors and production companies choose to implement a very straight forward approach to the layout of the film, the start, the middle and the end, this has been used fro years and will continue to be used for many years to come,
